The term and vision of Personal Networks was coined in 2001 and published shortly after in:

Three projects were formed to research the issues around personal networks, one EU project and two Dutch projects:
- MAGNET and MAGNET Beyond funded by the European Commission under Framework Programme 6 (FP6). MAGNET had 30 partners from 15 countries, among these Industrial Partners, Universities, and Research Centres and ran 4.5 years between 2004 and 2008.
- Freeband PNP2008 funded by the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs. PNP2008 consisted of 6 partners (Philips, KPN, TNO, TI-WMC, Delft University of Technology, and University of Twente) and ran for just over four years between 2004 and 2008.
- IOP GenCom QoS in PN@Home funded by the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs under SenterNovem.
