The term and vision of Personal Networks was coined in 2001 and published shortly after in:

Three projects were formed to research the issues around personal networks, one EU project and two Dutch projects:
MAGNET and MAGNET Beyond funded by the European Commission under Framework Programme 6 (FP6). MAGNET had 30 partners from 15 countries, among these Industrial Partners, Universities, and Research Centres and ran 4.5 years between 2004 and 2008.
Freeband PNP2008 funded by the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs. PNP2008 consisted of 6 partners (Philips, KPN, TNO, TI-WMC, Delft University of Technology, and University of Twente) and ran for just over four years between 2004 and 2008.
